What You Can Throw in a Rental Scrap Bin (And What You Can’t)

One of the most common questions we get at Ken’s Salvage is: can I throw this in the bin? The short answer is that most household and construction waste is completely fine, but there are a handful of materials that can’t go in for safety, environmental, and legal reasons. Here’s a clear breakdown.

What’s Allowed

The vast majority of waste from home renovations, cleanouts, and construction projects is perfectly acceptable in a rental bin. This includes:

General Household Junk

• Furniture (couches, mattresses, bed frames)
• Clothing, boxes, and miscellaneous clutter
• Carpeting and flooring materials
• Broken glass and mirrors (as long as it is wrapped safely)
• Toys, sporting equipment, and household items

Construction and Renovation Debris

• Drywall and plaster
• Lumber, trim, and framing materials
• Roofing shingles
• Concrete and brick (our 30 or 40 yard bin is recommended for heavy loads)
• Tiles, insulation, and general demolition debris

Yard Waste

• Tree branches and brush
• Sod and general yard debris
• Fencing materials

What’s NOT Allowed

The following items cannot be placed in any of Ken’s Salvage’s rental bins. This isn’t just our policy. Many of these materials are regulated under Ontario environmental law and require special disposal.

• Tires
• Propane tanks
• Paint cans (even empty ones)
• Fluorescent light fixtures
• Asbestos
• Dirt (fill material)
• Pails, barrels, or drums of any kind
• Oil or automotive fluids
• Telephone poles
• Fridges, freezers, and air conditioners
• Dehumidifiers and water coolers
• Batteries

Why Are These Items Restricted?

Most restricted items contain hazardous materials like refrigerants, heavy metals, flammable liquids, or toxic compounds. Hazardous materials can’t go to a standard landfill. Improper disposal of these materials is an environmental offence in Ontario and can result in significant fines.

The good news is that most of these items have designated drop-off programs. The Niagara Region’s Household Special Waste facility accepts many of them, and some municipalities offer periodic pickup events. Ken’s Salvage can point you in the right direction if you’re not sure where to take something.
